Marriage (Holy Matrimony)
Forms/Information
|
Holy Matrimony “comes about through a promise made by a man and a woman before God and the Church, which is accepted and confirmed by God and consummated by the bodily union of the couple. Because God himself forms the bond of sacramental marriage, it is binding until the death of one of the partners. The man and the woman mutually administer the sacrament of Matrimony. The priest or the deacon calls down God’s blessing on the couple and, furthermore, witnesses that the marriages comes about under the right circumstances and that the promise is comprehensive and is made publicly. A marriage can come about only if there is marital consent, that is, if the man and the woman enter marriage of their own free will, without fear or cooercion, and if they are not prevented from marrying by other natural or ecclesiastical ties (for example, an existing marriage, a vow of celibacy).” YOUCAT, §261
Holy Matrimony is a Sacrament of “Communion and Mission” as it brings together a man and a woman for a very specific purpose—to love and help each other and their children grow closer to Jesus and His Church. Unless given a dispensation from the bishop, those seeking this Sacrament are required to complete 6 months of preparation before receiving it and are encouraged to participate in marriage enrichment programs afterwards. If you have previously been married civilly, religiously, or ecclesiastically, you will need to undergo the annulment process first to make sure that you can freely consent to Holy Matrimony. While this can be a painful process, those who have done it note its healing effects. Moreover, annulments do not delegitimize children from previous unions. We currently do weddings at local Catholic churches in the Myrtle Beach area. If you have any questions, contact us for more details |
