ConfirmationThe Sacrament of Confirmation is often spoken of as the “ceremony” when teens choose for themselves to be Catholic: parents made the choice at baptism; now it’s time for teens to make their own choice.
While everyone — even teens — must make a personal and conscious decision to follow Jesus, the Sacrament of Confirmation must not be understood as a “sacrament of decision.” Confirmation is not about a teen “confirming” his or her faith in Jesus. Rather, Confirmation is about Jesus confirming — that is, strengthening — the gift of the Holy Spirit that was given at baptism. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church says, through Confirmation, “Jesus Christ [marks] a Christian with the seal of his Spirit by clothing him with power from on high so that he may be his witness” (CCC, 1304). Confirmation is about what Jesus does to us. To help you, the parents, prepare your child to be strengthened by the Holy Spirit, we do not have a traditional Confirmation program. First, because we believe that the grace of the Holy Spirit is necessary for a strong relationship with Jesus, our Confirmation program is open to any child at least 12 years old. They will attend eight Confirmation-specific classes, each focusing on the person and work of the Holy Spirit in their lives. And second, because families must grow in faith together, our Confirmation program is only open to those families who faithfully attend Sunday Mass at Frassati Catholic Church and are regular and active members of our Family Discipleship Program.
