Family-based Faith Formation
“Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule. The home is well suited for education in the virtues…Parents have a grave responsibility to give good example to their children. By knowing how to acknowledge their own failings to their children, parents will be better able to guide and correct them.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2223)
Our faith formation program is family-based. Parents/guardians attend classes with their children. Because parents are their children’s primary educators, we will focus upon teaching and providing resources that begin an on-going conversation for the home between parents and children.
Our faith formation program is year-round. We do not follow the school calendar. Studying the Catholic Faith is not like learning math or history. It is not confined to nine-months out of the year. Authentic faith engages one’s mind and heart, and it should permeate all aspects of one’s life, regardless of the seasons of nature, the Liturgy, or one’s life. We do, however, take breaks throughout the year, particularly when we change topics. And because our program is year-round, there is no need to register for our program. Please feel free to join whenever it is convenient for you and your family.
Our faith formation program focuses on doctrine, fellowship, prayer, and service. Coming to know Christ better and love him more is the goal of our program. Most weeks, we seek to find creative ways to engage families in the teaching of Christ and the Church. We also recognize that community is an essential aspect of Christianity (the word “Church” comes from the Greek word that means “community), and so we have several Fellowship Sundays throughout the year in which we take a break from teaching and gather for food and fun. Because prayer is the heart of discipleship, we make time throughout the year for family-based prayer events. Finally, Christ calls us to serve others, and so the fourth element of our program is engaging regularly in various service projects in cooperation with Friends of Frassati.
Our faith formation is the hub for the sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation. Our sacramental program flows out of Family Faith Formation. Regular participation in our Family Faith Formation program is the gateway into our sacramental workshops. Workshops for both First Reconciliation/Communion and Confirmation begin in October and are held once-a-month for six months. Children seeking First Communion should should be at least six years old, and those seeking Confirmation should be at least eleven years old.
Our faith formation begins with you. The absolute best way to begin to catechize your children is by praying daily as a family. Parents who pray with their children show their children the importance of a God-centered life. Opportunities for prayer are as varied as life: before and after sleeping, before and after meals, while traveling, playing, studying, etc. To get started with family prayer, set aside a few minutes each evening to pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary, the Glory Be, and the Act of Contrition. By engaging in family prayer, you lay the foundations for a desire to know Christ better and to meet him through the sacraments.
Family Faith Formation meets at 9:30am on Sunday at Seton Catholic School.
